First lunch
Catalans are known to enjoy a good vermouth. There are dedicated bars sprinkled throughout Barcelona (one favorite is a casual cafe in El Born called Bormouth). For some it is an acquired taste but I love it.
Most restaurants do not open for lunch until 1pm, as I learned while visiting my friend Laura in her charming village of Sant Cugat a weekend not long ago. While we were wandering through a market, I noticed that some cafes were open and serving snacks and beverages. Laura explained that this was “first lunch,” consisting of potato chips, olives, cheese and, of course, vermouth. I was enthralled.
To ensure I was never without this option, I proceeded to buy my own artisanal bottle of vermouth. The next day I sent Laura photographic evidence of my successful, homemade first lunch. She approved.
